Invoking Lords Shiva and Ganesha in the New Year

1/1/2014

On this New Year, my thoughts turn towards Lord Shiva and his son, Ganesha, as I seek their blessings for 2014.  Shiva is considered to be the lord of change and transformation; he destroys so that re-creation can occur.  His power to destroy for the benefit of creation is extraordinary and unfathomable.  In the most spiritual sense, Shiva destroys our illusions of the external world, so that we may experience the ultimate reality and truth within ourselves and the universe.  In our daily lives, any time that we experience the loss of a loved one, the end of a meaningful relationship, the loss of a job, or a move to a new city, we can be sure that it is due to Lord Shiva and that new beginnings are soon to follow.  His power of destruction is seen as a beneficial, positive force through which room for new growth is created.  Lord Shiva’s son is Ganesha, and he is also affectionately revered by many.  He is considered to be the remover of obstacles.  Invocations to Lord Ganesha are often made at the start of new ventures such as the start of a new business, marriage, or other significant life events.

Each New Year is a time marked by reflections of the past, hopes for the future, and resolutions intended to create more peace and joy in our lives.  So, at this time, I invite you to consider the power of Lords Shiva and Ganesha.  Allow Lord Shiva into your thoughts and heart, so that through his blessings, you may begin to let go of all that no longer serves you.  Call on Lord Ganesha to remove any obstacles on your path so that you may continue to evolve on your journey with grace.  Consider how Lords Shiva and Ganesha have created the space for transformation in your life thus far, and have already removed many obstacles along the way.  Have faith that they will continue to support you in this new year and beyond.

May your new year be filled with so much peace and joy, love and light.  Om Shantih.
